Frequently asked questions
Which babies need ROP screening?
Babies born before 32 weeks, weighing less than 1500 g, or who needed oxygen after birth should be screened. The first check is usually within 4–6 weeks of birth, timed to the screening schedule.
Is ROP screening painful for the baby?
No. The examination is gentle — eye drops dilate the pupils, and the retina is checked with a special instrument. The baby may be a little fussy from the drops, but there is no pain.
