WHAT WE TREAT

Paediatric Ophthalmology Clinic

A clinic set up for little ones — because children’s eyes are not small adult eyes.

Paediatric Ophthalmology Clinic at Rana Eye Centre

What this service covers

  • Refractive errors, squint and muscle imbalance
  • Childhood cataract, allergies and infections
  • Congenital naso-lacrimal duct blockage causing watering
  • Retinopathy of prematurity and capillary hemangioma

Children do not always recognise or describe a vision problem. Eye checks can identify focusing errors, squint, lazy eye and other conditions while visual development is still taking place. The examination is adapted to the child's age and ability to respond.

Signs parents and teachers may notice

  • One eye turning in, out, up or down, even if it happens only when tired
  • Sitting very close, holding reading material near the face or closing one eye
  • Frequent headaches, eye rubbing, blinking or difficulty maintaining attention for near work
  • A white pupil in photographs, an unusual eye movement or a sudden change in vision

What happens during a child eye examination

Age-appropriate pictures, lights and matching tests can be used before a child is able to read a letter chart. Eye drops may be advised to relax focusing and measure the full spectacle prescription. Alignment, eye movements and the health of the eye are also assessed.

If glasses, patching, drops, exercises or surgery are discussed, parents receive an explanation of the aim, expected time frame and follow-up plan. Early treatment is particularly important when one eye is not developing vision normally.

When not to wait

An eye injury, chemical exposure, severe pain, a sudden squint with other symptoms, a white pupil or rapid visual change needs prompt medical attention rather than a routine screening appointment.

Frequently asked questions

When should my child have their first eye check?

A baseline check at around 6 months, again at age 3, and before starting school. If there is a family history of squint, lazy eye or high glasses number, bring them earlier.
